This is the second of an ongoing series of posts in which I will discuss some of the things that parents and students might forget about when transitioning from high school to college.
If you look online, you will find many lists of items that students should have for their college dorm. I don’t want to repeat the same old list of things, like mattress toppers, alarm clocks, or laundry hampers. Instead, I want to share a few of the items that my son has found essential for his dorm room, and that I have not seen on other lists.
Possibly the most essential item in my son’s dorm room is this Germ Guardian AirSafe Air Purifier with 360 Degree HEPA 13 Filter. My son suffers from allergies, and this HEPA filter has been a life-saver for him. He’s been sick far less than most of the other students on his hall, and we attribute some of that good fortune to this air purifier.
It’s 1000 miles door-to-door from our home to my son’s college. That means lots of driving, which means lots of gas. Rather than using his debit card to buy gas (which comes with skimming concerns), my son uses these Visa Gift Cards to pay at the pump. That $4.95 fee is well worth the peace of mind, and avoiding the hassle that would come along with having my son’s bank account hacked.
OK, so maybe some other dorm essentials lists include coffee makers. My son really loves his single-cup coffee maker because it DOESN’T use K-Cups, but instead allows him to brew a cup of a different coffee every month with his subscription to Forge Coffee. Forge is owned and operated by an old college buddy of mine, and he roasts some of the best coffee on the planet. I also love my own monthly delivery of Forge’s amazing coffee. So, perhaps order some for yourself, in addition to a subscription for your student!
