3 Reasons You Aren't Winning Scholarships
Many students, as well as their parents, find the scholarship process frustrating. They often wonder how to find scholarships, which ones to apply for, and how to create a winning application. When students don’t have success with scholarships, that frustration increases. In my experience, there are three main reasons why a student isn't successful in securing scholarships.
Not Applying for Enough Scholarships
Winning scholarships is largely a numbers game. Unfortunately, many students miss out on scholarships because they don't apply for enough of them. Students who win 20% of the scholarships they apply for are considered very successful. Some students give up too easily if they don't win one of the first scholarships they apply for. To succeed, students need to be resilient and persistent. It's important not to lose hope and to keep applying.
Not Applying for the Right Scholarships
Remember to focus on applying for scholarships that align with your goals and qualifications. It's important to prioritize local over national scholarships and apply for scholarships applicable to your situation. Additionally, consider applying for scholarships that award multiple prizes, as this can increase your chances of winning. Don’t overlook smaller scholarships, as they often have less competition. Overall, prioritize scholarships that match your Personal Narrative and future aspirations, as this approach can boost your chances of success and give you confidence in your choices.
Not Having a Strong Personal Narrative
Speaking of the Personal Narrative, this is the key to winning scholarships. Anyone can write an essay that says they want to do something. I could write an essay stating that I want to be an astronaut or a doctor. But nothing in my history shows I have the interest or ability to do those things. One reason I encourage students to apply for scholarships before their senior year of high school is that, besides being good practice and offering the opportunity to win some huge scholarships (check out this full-ride scholarship only open to high school juniors), it gives students time to develop their Personal Narrative. This includes learning how to write a compelling Personal Narrative essay and identifying areas in which the student can demonstrate their interests and abilities. The earlier students identify their passion and purpose, the more success they will have with scholarships and college admissions. The Number One Reason Scholarship Applications Are Rejected
Those are some of the most common reasons a student is not succeeding with scholarships. However, there is one more fundamental reason that a student might not be winning scholarships. I talk to numerous scholarship providers, and they all tell me that this one thing is why they reject applications - sometimes as many as 90% of the applications they receive! It’s one of the most obvious and the most simple to correct, and it’s the topic of the lesson entitled "How to Beat 90% of Scholarship Applicants” in the Scholarship GPS Course.
